When I married my husband Ammad Sheikh in 2007, he had already completed his active duty in the United States Military and was working as a DVOP/LVER for the Department of Workforce Development. In that role, he assisted veterans with disabilities with jobs and careers, as they returned from Iraq and Afghanistan.
This gave me the opportunity to learn more about the unique challenges faced by veterans with PTSD. The more I learned, the more I knew we had to find a way to give back to this amazing community who had given us so much.
Now that my husband works at Virginia Military Institute, I have taken the lead on our new mission—to develop this 107 acres property into a retreat center for veterans. Our goal is to have horses and other farm animals that can be therapeutic to veterans with PTSD.
We purchased this land during the Fall of 2022, and while we work to develop this place into a working farm and make it available for veterans to spend time with animals, hike, shoot, and relax in the woods, the newly renovated 2,671 sq. ft house is available for a short term rental.
My name is Maryam Sheikh, and I invite you to join us on our mission to create a place of refuge, healing, connection, and hope.
